Rehabilitation not Repeat Offenders.

For the future of my design I wanted its people to be positive members of society. Did I think this was realistic? No. Even though I got rid of racism and war, I am not naive enough to think I could get rid of all bad behaviour. I don’t believe there will ever be a time when there aren’t bad people or that bad things don’t happen and that there is no need for a justice system.
That is why I created a new justice system (see last weeks post “I want(ed) Just Justice”). I didn’t want to stop there, so I created a new form of ‘punishment’.

There are three forms of sentencing in my future, criminal go to one of three places: A Mental Health Facility (MHF), A Secured Facility (SF), or to a Desert (D).

A MHF I hope is self explanatory. If the jury believes that if the defendant had delt with mental issues they would not have committed the crime, they are sentenced here. They stay as long as they need to.

For a defendant to be sent to a SF they are believed to be able to be rehabilitated. They are given opportunities to better themselves and acquire skills to make them contributors to society instead of takers. They are committed until they can prove they are fit for reintroduction to society.

If there is no chance for a defendant to be rehabilitated then they go to a Desert. These places vary in harshness… it could be rebuilding a town after a natural disaster, or cleaning up the earth, or cleaning up nuclear waste and anything in between. And it is for life. The most gravest crimes go where the life expectancy isn’t very long.

Find out where my five characters go for their crimes…
