Nutin’.
How many times have we heard this answer from our children. I got so sick of asking them about their school day and getting nothing that I changed the question.
Every night at dinner I would ask; “What did you learn today that you didn’t know yesterday?” I wanted my children to understand that learning wasn’t just about Reading, Writing & Arithmetic (ever notice Reading is the only R in the 3Rs?). That learning was about expanding your understanding and knowledge.
Expanding knowledge just means that everyday there is something new to be learned. It doesn’t have to be huge, it could be anything. The only criterion is that it wasn’t known the day before. In other words it doesn’t have to be the Theory of Relativity it could be your new friends favorite colour.
Changing the question made all the difference. We would have meaningful conversations (and silly ones too) almost every night at dinner. The best part… I got to participate as well. For I, too, learn something new everyday.
