Is it the sender or the receiver?
I have always believed that the a good conversation is like playing catch. I have actually taught under five year old’s to play catch… successfully. Look where you are throwing (the chest of the catcher/ glove) , Point to where you are throwing with your glove (the chest of the catcher/ glove) and toes, Ball/Hand behind your head, Throw, Point to were you want the ball to land (the chest of the catcher/ glove) .
Simple? Ummm no. There are a lot of moving parts and sometimes, especially if you are distracted, the ball ends up wwwaaayyyy off the mark. And there are the other things to consider too; the stance, the direction of the sun, are both parties looking… BUT, it can be taught.
Same with communication. I believe it is the responsibility of the sender to get the information to the receiver. However, once the receiver has the information it is now them who is the sender. It is the responsibility of BOTH to be present, be ready, be open, know the audience (receiver), know where they are and what they can/willing to understand. Look for signs of understanding and rephrase for comprehension.
If five year old’s and under can learn to play catch with each other, I am sure adults can learn to communicate.
