I figure the first real story about myself that I could tell is how I came about writing Through Their Eyes. Well, this isn’t the first thing I tried to write, maybe I will tell that story another time, however, it is the first thing that I have published.
I injured my back right before Covid, so I was pretty much housebound before the rest of you. And like many of you, I watched a lot of Netflix. It was nice to have some company during lockdowns, but eventually everyone went back to work. So when I finished Netflix I was looking for something to do.
One night a sentence came into my mind… “There she stood in the doorway…” and I thought that that would be a great first sentence to a novel. The next day I started writing… and writing I did. I had no idea what the book was going to be about. Sometimes I came up with ideas, and wrote them down. Sometimes I came up with ‘future’ chapters (some made it other didn’t). But mostly I just wrote until I felt the book was finished.
I wrote a story that I would like to read. About characters I could relate to, about a future I thought was realistic, about a justice system I would like to see. I didn’t know if others would like it too, it just was something to keep me occupied while I waited for Netflix to update their selection.
So I gave it to some people who read it. Someof them told me I ought to publish, so I tried. I sent it off to three or four publishing houses… they take up to 10 to 12 months to get back to you. So I waited to be rejected. I let it go.
At the end of September, 2025 a friend of mine asked me what I had done with my book. “Nothing,” I had said, “No one wanted it.” And we went on to talk of other things. Well, this friend who shall remain Karla, wouldn’t let it go and sent me a link to a Book Writer’s Bootcamp hosted by Hay House. I went for it. I learned SOOOO much, I was overwhelmed. I decided to go for it. One of the things that they said often is that it is hard to get picked up by a traditional house and the self publishing is a way to break in without all the rejections, especially for fiction writers. So that is what I did.
I started looking into it in November, took the plunge right before Christmas with Friesen Press, a Canadian Company. They said it would be sometime in August that I would publish. Well, April 24th I got an email saying that I was available for purchase… Well my book was/is, but it feels like it is me out there, on display, waiting to be validated… That perchance, is another story for another day.
So, if you haven’t already please support me and buy my book. “Through Their Eyes” A novel by K. Cindee Doll. Found most places online. Would love you to support those who supported me at Friesen Press . If you love it, please give a review. If you hate it, blame Karla.
